How to Safely Prepare and Sell Your MacBook Online

When upgrading to a new M-series MacBook, selling your old machine is a great way to fund the purchase. But before you hand over your MacBook, it is vital to protect your private data and ensure the device is in clean physical and functional condition to secure the highest possible payout.

Step 1: Create a Full Backup Before erasing anything, perform a final Time Machine backup to an external hard drive, or sync your files, desktop folders, and photos to iCloud. Once erased, your data cannot be recovered.

Step 2: Sign Out of All Apple Accounts Failing to log out can lock the next user out of the MacBook. Be sure to log out of: * **iCloud:** Go to System Settings > Apple ID > Sign Out. * **iMessage:** Open Messages > Settings > Sign Out. * **Find My Mac:** Disable this setting to release Activation Lock.

Step 3: Erase All Content and Settings If you are running macOS Monterey or later on Apple Silicon (or an Intel Mac with the T2 security chip), you can use the built-in Erase Assistant: 1. Open **System Settings**. 2. Click **General** in the sidebar. 3. Click **Transfer or Reset** on the right. 4. Click **Erase All Content and Settings** and follow the prompt instructions.

Step 4: Clean the Physical Hardware A dirty laptop looks neglected and can lower valuation. Wipe down the screen with distilled water and a micro-fiber cloth (avoid harsh chemicals which eat the anti-reflective screen coating), clear dust from the keyboard keys, and clean the outer metal ports.
